London’s Christmas Markets

See the Southbank Centre come alive with a bustling Christmas market, festive shows (from 11th November 2016 to 25th January 2017) and twinkling Christmas lights lining the River Thames.

The festival offers a packed schedule of free and ticketed events for all ages. From theatrical performances and festive concerts to social dances and community choirs. There is also plenty of Christmas shopping and food and drinks to be enjoyed, as well as family activities to keep the children entertained.

Leicester Square

london christmas marketsChristmas in Leicester Square is a new exciting festival for 2016. The centre of London will be transformed into a spectacular wonderland. Including a traditional Christmas market with hand-crafted goods and tasty food and drinks, a Santa’s Grotto, plus a vintage Spiegeltent, a venue for Christmas shows and the return of the excellent Olivier Award-winning La Soirée Circus!

This festival will run from 11th November to 8th January 2017. Entry to Christmas in Leicester Square is free, but tickets must be bought for selected events, including Santa’s Grotto (tickets cost £10 per child, includes 2 accompanying adults) and for La Soirée performances (tickets from £38.50 per person. Duration 120 minutes).

London’s Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is the ideal place to head with the kids. The event runs from 18th November 2016 to 2nd January 2017 (open daily from 10am to 10pm except Friday 18th November when it opens at 5pm and closed on Christmas Day).

Top activities include the UK’s largest outdoor ice skating rink, shows such as The Nutcracker on Ice, a magical Ice Kingdom with impressive ice sculptures and Sootys Christmas show. ITV’s Sooty, Sweep and Soo take to the stage each day at 11am, for magic, music and giggles – perfect for the little ones. Take a ride on the Giant Observation Wheel where you can enjoy a flight 60m above London, offering stunning views of the city’s skyline.

There will also be a traditional German Christmas market which will house more than 200 chalets overflowing with festive goods, as well as plenty of stalls serving an array of food and drink. There will be Santa’s grotto as well as a traditional fairground with lots of rides. The wonderland is free to enter but charges apply for rides, ice skating, big top shows, the observation wheel and Bar Ice.

Ice Rinks

For a magical winter experience, take to the ice at one of London’s outdoor pop-up ice rinks, with spectacular iconic backdrops. This will certainly make you feel like you are in a winter wonderland.

Somerset House ice rink (open between 17th November 2016 – 15th January 2017, closed 25th December) runs day skating sessions and a programme of cool club nights under the stars when the rink comes alive with top international DJs. london ice rink christmas marketsGlide across the ice at the Tower of London’s ice rink (16th November 2016 – 3rd January 2017). Nestled in the dry moat with the imposing and dramatic landmark looming overhead. When night falls see hundreds of snowflakes illuminate the walls of the tower. First skate 11.00am – last skate 9.00pm. With quiet morning sessions ideal for younger children and families, leading into busy afternoon and bustling evening entertainment, there is fun for all age groups and skating abilities. To avoid queuing, it is best to book tickets in advance.
