Everyone looks forward to the weekend as a chance to spend precious time with family and friends or enjoy some “me” time. However, for most of us, our weekends end up being spent catching up on chores that we haven’t had a chance to get done during our working week.

As we all know, weekends fly by and before you know it is Monday morning again. If you would like to change this pattern and really make the most out of your two days off, check out our tips below that will help you get the most enjoyment out of your weekend.

How to get the most out of your weekend:

  1. Plan several fun activities ahead of the weekend. These could include dinner at your favourite restaurant, an evening at a concert, a weekend away or even a nice Winter walk. Planning the activity ahead of time helps ensure you actually DO IT, and also lets you savour the joy of anticipating something fun. Research shows we are often happier anticipating an event than we are during or after it, so this is a great way to boost your mood throughout the week too.
  2. Schedule in some exercise. In addition to being good for your health, exercise is proven to boost positivity and energy. You could plan to go for a long walk with friends, or perhaps wake early and go for a run before the rest of the family wake up!
  3. Impose a technology ban. It just isn’t possible to enjoy the moment when you are constantly distracted by technology. Try to dedicate at least a few hours during your weekend to not looking at your smartphone. It is all too easy to become distracted by social media and work emails and as a result, spend far less time than planned with your family and friends.
  4. Schedule in work hours if required. If you do need to work at the weekend, consider a specific time in the day to work or to sort through your inbox, rather than periodically checking and replying to emails all day long. Nothing annoys your partner, friends and family more than you being constantly distracted during your limited time together.
  5. Avoid the Sunday night blues by planning some fun for the week ahead. This gives you something to look forward to and helps extend the weekend by keeping you focused on the fun to come, rather than on Monday morning. You could invite people round for supper, book yourself in to an early-evening exercise class or check out what will be on at the cinema.

It is well known that being successful in life requires recharging the batteries from time to time. For you to be able to fully recuperate, your weekends need to feel different from your weekdays.

The last thing any of us want to be faced with on a Saturday morning is another list of tedious chores that need doing. You may already have a cleaner who comes during the to help you with the mundane housework.
